Welcome to the National Biophotonics and Imaging Platform Ireland website

NBIP Ireland was established in 2007 under HEA PRTLI Cycle 4. The platform consists of a consortium of imaging and biophotonics laboratories from across the Universities and Institutes of Technology in Ireland, 3 EU partners; CNRS Montpellier (France), the CNR Institute of Biostructure and Bioimaging, Naples (Italy) and The Nordic Imaging Network and 1 associated international partner; CECs, (Chile)

Access Charges
NBIPI have an SFI pre-approved Access Charge Model in place. Researchers can now include Access Charges for NBIPI equipment usage as a separate line item in the budget for all SFI proposals. A technician can work with you to provide estimated costs for your proposal. • To provide a structured research and training framework for Ireland's investment in advanced imaging applied to the Life Sciences
  • To catalyze and support internationally competitive research grant applications
  • To develop and support Post-graduate Training Programmes underpinned by biophotonics and imaging
  • To bridge the Physical and Life Sciences interface
  • To provide a National Access for Core Facilities in Molecular, Cellular, Small Animal and Human Research Imaging
  • To provide the administrative and scientific infrastructure for Ireland's participation in large-scale international research programmes

In 2008, NBIP Ireland was awarded EU funding to support the establishment of a European-wide post-doctoral Career Enhancement and Mobility Programme (CEMP). The FP7 Marie-Curie COFUND enabled 16 post doctoral researchers to collaborate with research organisations in the public and private sectors across Europe.

NBIP Ireland has agreed a Memorandum of Understanding with its EU partners to compete for European collaborative research programme funding.

NBIP Ireland is the national representative for Ireland's participation in the ESFRI Euro-BioImaging Project.

NBIP Ireland is funded by the Irish Government’s Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions, Cycle 4, Ireland's EU Structural Funds Programmes 2007 - 2013 and EU FP7.

NBIP Ireland Educational Program PDF Print E-mail

NBIPI has trained > 50 PhD graduates directly funded by the platform since 2008 plus 60 postodctoral researchers. They are the next generation of multidisciplinary imaging scientists and have links with laboratories all over Europe and with Canadian, U.S. and Russian partners.

NBIPI education modules cover a broad spectrum of topics from microscopy to image processing. These modules are used in national education programmes including:
BioInnovate Ireland
MSc in Biomedical Science, NUIG
BioAT structured PhD Programme, DCU
Biomedical Engineering and Regenerative Medicine structured PhD Programme, NUIG.

Our goals:

  • To develop materials for computer-assisted teaching and learning post-graduate curriculum
  • To assist in co-ordination of marketing of post-graduate programmes developed by the partnership
  • To identify new opportunities for distance learning in postgraduate programmes
  • To identify new opportunities for co-ordination and integration of educational programmes
