The number 12 is a ubiquitous number meaning many things within many societies and traditions. In fact, the 12 stars on the flag of Europe symbolise unity and completeness – one character marrying a diverse range of cultures and customs. Much like any union, the science of biophotonics requires the input of diverse disciplines and participants all working in sync and harmony to really make it come alive. Sponsored by Photonics 4 Life and supported by SPIE - BIGSS provides a platform whereby teachers and students from all related disciplines of biophotonics and imaging can communicate, exchange ideas and learn in a mutually comprehensible and fun format for all.

Our next school will be structured around a central theme of the number “12”. Each month between now and June we will announce each of our twelve biophotonics and imaging "stars" - special guest lecturers, and leaders - each delivering an intense course in their specialist area that together, will unify the many fields and applications of biophotonics and imaging under one umbrella for 40 lucky postgraduate students and early stage researchers from around the world.

The school will take place in the Burren, a unique and ruggedly beautiful location on the south west coast of Ireland. This peripheral and wild location is purposefully chosen to foster student-tutor interaction and enhance the learning experience, yet Shannon international airport it is only a picturesque 45 min drive away. We aim to provide a uniquely designed programme that integrates lessons delivered by world leading experts in the field with industry sponsored workshops and of course, a range of fun activities for both students and speakers to enjoy.

So stay tuned and sign up to one of our networking sites for all the latest updates as they happen! Remember, places are limited and demand is high so please prepare early. Competitive applications based on current or prospective research will be accepted from January 2012.
