NBIP Ireland Education Program in detail:
Training will be delivered by Research Engineers and/or Senior Scientists with proven experience in imaging and/or biophotonics technologies and research applications. The long term plan of the platform is to deliver most modules via distance learning.


Educational Modules:
NBIPI educational modules will be available to all researchers on the NBIPI moodle site. E-learning will not only overcome logistical barriers but will also deliver economy of resources and set quality standards of training. E-learning will include live training and web-based integrated computer/video training programmes. The structure of NBIP Educational Programme will consist of three levels, with each level building on the previous. Level 1 and 2 modules are available to all registered on the NBIPI moodle site. Training programme format:

Level 1: An integrated curriculum covering the fundamental underpinnings of biophotonics, imaging and microscopes. Practical teaching will be undertaken in small groups through taught lectures, integrated tutorials and on-line learning & testing resources.

Level 2: A modular curriculum including modules that are or will be developed and delivered primarily by individual institutions in the form of week long (approximately) practical courses. These modules will be based around specific instruments, technologies, and expertise located in a particular institution.

Level 3: This advanced training will be shaped on a one by one basis from research driven questions. Modules at level 3 will consist of longer term research visits to particular labs within the NBIPI platform to gain access to highly advanced technologies/facilities. While at the host lab the participant will not only receive advanced, in-depth training in the particular technology, but they will also be able to carry out experiment for their research project. The platform will make available a directory of individuals/groups and expertise/instruments that are available to engage in formal collaboration on research driven questions.

Overseas laboratory placements: Level 3 will also include oversees placements for up to 6 months in established collaborators laboratories (for RCSI these include – Patrice Mollard, CNRS Montpellier; Garret Fitzgerald, U. Penn USA; Gil White, The Blood Institute, Univ Wisconsin USA); for UL these include – Gert Nilsson, University of Linkoping; Valery Tuchin, Saratov State Univ., Russia). Modules of the NBIP training programme will be incorporated into existing or planned qualifications on the basis of institutional/programme/individual need. On completion of a preparatory phase (where training material and resources are going to be put in place) the NBIP training programme will be opened not only to NBIP researchers but also, on a fee-basis, to anyone requiring training in imaging, including industrial partners, who will be able to avail of elements of the NBIP initiative on a needs-driven basis.


Graduate Enhancement Education Programme - GEEP:
A novel component of the NBIP proposal is a national systematic training programme in Biophotonics and Imaging (A Graduate Enhancement Education Programme - GEEP). The NBIP training programme, led by Prof Peter Dockery (NUIG), will provide a coherent, comprehensive Imaging Training Infrastructure that will enhance both local and National postgraduate and post-doctoral research training programmes.The GEEP platform will not be exclusive to the NBIP users and will also be open to current existing 4-year structured PhD programmes (RCSI Diagnostics and Therapeutics for Human Disease and UCC Cancer Biology and TCD Neuroscience HRB Training sites). In successor PRTLI Cycles the NBIP GEEP will form the basis of a Graduate School in Cell Signalling and Imaging in strategic areas of research prioritized by the partner institutions and complement the formation of Schools in Regenerative Medicine (NUIG), Neuroscience (TCD). The focus of the training programme will be postgraduate researchers at the pre and postdoctoral stage and career scientists. The GEEP in Imaging will also provide a training and professional development programme for Research Engineers and so lead to the long-term sustainability of this programme. The educational framework envisaged is a national one, harmonising needs in microscopy and imaging across all institutions, while maximizing the efficient use of resource and expertise.
