Spectroscopic Imaging Techniques for Cancer Diagnosis (ITC-7) |
|
Team: Hugh J Byrne, Fiona Lyng, Mehmood Ali, Nosheen Rashid
This project is based on the capabilities of vibrational spectroscopy to finger print materials and therefore to characterise differences of state of health of biological tissue and cells. The technique offers a highly sensitive, objective and automatable screening modality for clinical applications.
We are working in collaboration with the National Maternity Hospital and the Coombe Women and Infants Hospital, where tissue and cellular material is pathologically defined and is subsequently subjected to characterisation using vibrational spectroscopy. In this way a database of normal, cancerous and precancerous spectral signatures can be established, against which unseen samples can be classified.
We intend to collaborate with instrument manufacturers to develop a clinically friendly instrument for use in diagnosis utilising our database for validation.
